How mobile laser guns operate

Police Laser Guns operate by firing a pulsed beam of light at a vehicle. The time it takes for the signal to be returned is then measured. The beam is very narrow, allowing precision targeting of individual vehicles. Guidelines state that an officer should only measure the speed of a vehicle they believe to be exceeding the limit. This is often why a driver with a laser detector may see a gun or van nearby, but will not get a warning alarm as they drive by.

Where is the best place to mount a laser detector?

Tests Blackspot have done with speed enforcement teams have shown that the most effective place for mounting a detector is low down on the windscreen. Alerts were given when the vehicle was targeted from a distance of 200 metres or more. If the laser is targeting the number plate at less than 200m it is likely that a screen-mounted detector will not give an alert, as at this distance the beam can be as narrow as 200cm. The detection range is up to 2 km.
