Sussex Speed Cameras Targeted by Anti Speed Camera Group
theargus.co.uk, 30th October 2008
Authorities in Sussex have to date spent nearly £13,000 on speed camera repairs already this year. Those responsible for the damage are a vigilante group who call themselves ‘MAD’
The group, which stands for ‘motorists against detection’, have said they were responsible for 11 of the attacks.
Their leader who calls himself Captain Gatso has said that they have been very busy and will not cease their campaign until the Government gets rid of all of the cameras. Sussex currently have 24 cameras and they are moved around between 60 boxes.
Some of the cameras were paint splattered whilst others were set alight during the attacks.
Sussex Safer Roads Partnership have inferred that to damage the cameras is to show contempt for other road users. He added that the cameras had reduced the number of casualties on the roads.
The vigilante group believe that the cameras spoil the relationship between police and the public.
