Police Cancel 200 Speeding Tickets In Sussex
Source BBC, 25th March 2010
Sussex police have been forced to cancel approximately 200 speeding tickets after it came to light that the camera being used to catch motorists had not been authorised by the government. This means that not only will a total of £12,000 be refunded but all of the penalty points will also be scrapped.
Supt Steve Barry said it was a "simple mistake" which had led to officers not getting the Concept Two speed camera signed off correctly by the home office (signature from the minister that had not been received). The camera was used for about 6 weeks before this error came to light.
"It does not mitigate the fact that the people concerned were probably speeding but we want the public to have absolute faith in speed enforcement policing. The reality is that speed does kill and it's a real significant factor in the number of people who are killed or seriously injured on the roads."
