ITV test speed cameras

Motorcycle News, November 4th 2005

The Tonight show with Trevor MacDonald has investigated the accuracy of speed cameras and the report airs on ITV1 this evening, November 4.

The Tonight treatment follows MCN's recent investigation which revealed that the LTI2020 laser speed detector used by many police forces struggles to get an accurate speed reading off a motorcycle.

Now the Tonight team has found that even on cars the device is easily confused.

The show tested one of the devices and will demonstrate just how easy it is to confuse one of the Safety Camera Partnership's main tools for prosecuting bikers.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, was present when the Tonight team tested the device: “It is clear to me that the equipment is unsuitable for obtaining evidence against motorists because of the ease with which it can be confused. Clearly the Home Office did not adequately test the device before issuing type approval.”

The report will be shown on the ITV1 channel at 8pm tonight, November 4
