Barnsley Council is to become the first in Britain to adopt the most advanced version of the "active road-sign".
Although the new signs will act only as a deterrent to speeding - rather speed cameras, which effectively police the area - it is alleged that they offer the most cost efficient way to reduce speeding.
The signs, developed by manufacturer 3M and tested in the Darton district of Barnsley, will display the exact speed a car is travelling in red if it is moving too quickly, and in green if it is being driven within the assigned speed limit.
Existing systems simply flash a warning to motorists if they speeding.
"Research from the US shows driver feedback signs to be the most cost effective and reliable way to make drivers slow down," said council environment spokesman Roy Miller.
"We were so pleased with how well they worked during the pilot that we made a significant investment in them."
Each sign will cost £3,000 each, and they will act in conjunction with the existing network of mobile and fixed speed cameras in the area.
