Pupils shame speeding motorists

BBC, Monday 25th February 2008

Drivers caught speeding outside schools in Norfolk face a telling off by pupils if they want to avoid a £60 fine and three points on their licence.

The pupils are working alongside the police to make drivers aware of the dangers of breaking the 30mph limit.

Those stopped are offered the chance to hear directly what the children think of speeding drivers.

Sgt Graham Dalton said: "The personal message has quite a high impact on the drivers and they sit up and listen."

Taken seriously

An operation outside Tuckswood Primary School, Norwich, saw children speak to drivers caught speeding.

One said: "We are speaking to you because you were going too fast.

"People who go to this school are aged between four and 10 years old. Please think about us and don't speed when you drive."

One motorcyclist who opted for the telling off said: "It made me feel a bit awful when the little kids were talking to me."

Pupil Stacey said: "I think most of the drivers took us seriously, especially those with children in the back of the car because they don't want their children to get run over or hurt by a car."
