Teddy Sheringham Former England footballer was today cautioned for perverting the course of justice after his arrest for allegedly giving false details over a speeding offence.
The veteran striker, who won 51 England caps, was 1 of 3 footballers arrested in May in connection with the speeding offence which he later categorically denied.
Sheringham refused to answer the door at his mansion, named after Barcelona's Camp Nou
stadium, in Chingford, Essex, this afternoon.
He was arrested over claims he 'swapped' speeding points with fellow footballers so one could beat a driving ban.
He faced up to six years in prison if found guilty of perverting the course of justice along with fellow players Bobby Zamora and Shaun Newton.
Sheringham, whose father Paul is a retired policeman, recently received an MBE for services to football.
Detectives began their probe after one of the three footballers is said to have been caught pretending to be the driver of a car caught on a speed camera.
It is understood two of the players were trying to arrange a cover-up to help the real offender avoid receiving three points on his licence which would have put him over the 12-point licence limit and led to an immediate driving ban.
Sheringham was arrested on May 15th this year when he and his lawyer went to Chingford Police Station in east London by prior appointment and the player was questioned.
Two days later 31-year-old Newton - who like Sheringham was released by Premiership side West Ham United at the end of last season - was arrested at his home in Epsom, Surrey. He drives both a BMW convertible and a Mercedes 4x4.
The third arrest came when West Ham striker Zamora, 26, was held at his home on the Isle of Dogs in east London.
A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed today: "A 41-year-old man was cautioned today for perverting the course of justice."
Zamora was also let off with a police caution earlier this month after also admitting perverting the course of justice.
Newton, 30, who has just signed for Championship side Leicester City, is due to report back to police station later this month.
The investigation began after a civilian police worker reportedly spotted an image from a speed camera and believed the driver was not the person accepting the points, possibly because Sheringham is white and the other two are black. Police then looked into previous speeding fines for all three players.
Sheringham, who split from 23-year-old glamour girl Danielle Lloyd earlier this year, has enjoyed a distinguished 23-year career. After starting with Millwall he moved to Spurs and Nottingham Forest before playing a key role in Manchester United's 1999 treble success, scoring in the FA Cup Final and the Champions League final.
He recently signed for Championship side Colchester as a player-coach
