Speeding Fines for Dorset Drivers

BBC, 10th September 2010

Some parts of Dorset have the highest percentage of drivers convicted for speeding in the last five years, the insurer Admiral has found. Five areas across the county featured in the research which recorded where customers with speeding convictions lived.

Radlett, Hertfordshire, had the highest rate with 25.7% with Leatherhead in Surrey, Henley in Oxfordshire and Worcester all featuring in the top 10. St Ives in Cornwall had the lowest conviction rate at 5.5%.

% of drivers with speeding convictions in last five years
  • Radlett, Hertfordshire - 25.7%
  • Sandbanks, Dorset - 24.2%
  • Leatherhead, Surrey - 23.1%
  • Westbourne, Dorset - 22.9%
  • Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire - 22.1%
  • Henley, Oxfordshire - 21.9%
  • Lilliput, Poole, Dorset - 21.2%
  • Bushey, Hertfordshire - 21.1%
  • Salisbury, Wiltshire - 20.3%
  • Worcester - 20.3%

In a poll of 2,100 adults, Admiral also found that 87% of drivers admitted breaking the speed limit, with 69% thinking the 70mph limit on motorways should be 80mph or more.

Sue Longthorn, the managing director of Admiral, said: "Our statistics show a worrying trend that people see a speed limit as simply a guide rather than a speed that's appropriate for that road. It's a wonder that the national average for speeding convictions isn't higher given this fact."

The Sandbanks area of Poole, Dorset, came second in the list with 24.2% of drivers caught in the last five years. The Westbourne area of Bournemouth came fourth in the list, the Lilliput area of Poole was seventh, Winton in Bournemouth 15th and West Cliff in Bournemouth 20th.
