Road Angel Plus - Our Review

If you have read our review of the New Road Angel when it came out the only thing we could say against it was that it did not tell you the speed limit at the fixed camera locations. So we are therefore pleased to see that this has now been corrected at the Road Angel Plus takes the winning design of what is now the old "new" Road Angel and combines this with the more informative speed camera software running on the Road Angel Compact.

Furthermore they are now leading the pack with a battery powered unit, a first at the time of writing (Jan 2006), which enables you to have a wire free installation without a power cable trailing down the dashboard. So you get to maintain the nice aesthetics of your car interior and do not need to worry about the power lead tangling with the gear stick. The battery should last 8 hours on a fall charge but a 12v power cable is included so that you're never caught short out on the road and the Road Angel Plus can also be charged from the mains.

Since the Road Angel Plus can run off an internal battery and its compatible with the New Road Angels motorbike kit this makes it a rather ideal product for the biker community. Its not waterproof, but then none of its compatriates are either and a clear sandwich bag is usually enough to solve the issue.

As is the norm now updates are via a USB connection to a computer hooked up to the internet and you get a 6 month free subscription to speed camera updates before you need to subscribe. Your probably wondering about the quality of the speed camera alerts. Well laser detection for the mobile camera vans is inbuilt which is no better or worse than anyone elses if you understand that advanced laser alerts cannot be guaranteed, if not then read The Technology page. As for the database side of things, well it's not missed anything locally and as you may suspect from a company with the sales numbers and market penetration as Road Angel is that with a database already in use by probably several 100,000 people in the UK your not going to get a better database with that many people helping to fill in any few gaps that may be left.
What we like
  • Clear visual alerts
  • Battery power
  • Shows the speed limit at camera locations

What we don't like
  • Doesn't vocalise the speed limit!
